6 Ways To Prep Your Car For Long-Term Storage

There are all types of scenarios where you may need to store a vehicle. Maybe you only spend part of the year in Florida but don’t want to drive your car back and forth from where you spend the rest of your year. Maybe you’re going on vacation for a month and don’t want to leave it parked on your driveway to tempt some ne’er–do–well to break in. Or maybe you just don’t have room for it but don’t want to sell it for whatever reason. Regardless of your reason, once you’ve determined this is the best course of action, there are a few things you will need to do to ensure it’s ready to go.

Have it Washed

It may seem like a funny idea to have your car washed before you store it, but water stains or bird drops can in fact do long-term damage to the vehicle’s exterior if left for too long. Grease, mud or tar on the undersides of the fenders can also cause damage when left dirty for extended periods of time.

Get an Oil Change

If you plan on storing your car for more than a month, having its oil changed is a good idea because used oil can damage your engine if you leave it sitting for too long.

Fill’er Up

Sure it will be convenient to have a full tank of gas when you pick up your car from storage, but experts recommend it for more than just the sake of convenience. Filling the gas tank if you will be storing your vehicle for more than a month will prevent moisture from accumulating inside the tank. A fuel stabilizer can also prevent ethanol buildup and other issues that may arise.

Avoid Flat Spots

Have your tires properly inflated to the recommended tire pressure before storing your vehicle. This helps prevent your tires from developing flat spots from the weight of the car. You can also take the wheels off and put your vehicle on jack stands on all four corners.

Update Insurance

Don’t cancel your insurance to save money while your vehicle is being stored, because it might actually cost you money in the long run. That’s because gaps in coverage may lead to higher rates. Contact your insurance provider to ask them what they recommend while your car is in storage. You may be able to temporarily switch to a cheaper monthly rate with less coverage.
